Examining No Annual Fee Credit Cards

Annual fees were once the norm when it came to credit cards. We all paid an annual fee between $29 and $49 for the use of our credit card. However, as more and more banks and lending institutions began offering credit card services, it became quite a selling point to offer a no annual fee credit card.

When to Consider a Credit Card with a Fee

Now consumers can get a no annual fee credit card easily, although there are a few exceptions. However, does that mean that you should never consider a card that charges an annual fee?

The answer is no – and for a few reasons:

  • First, if you find a credit card that really meets all of your other expectations regarding its terms, conditions and interest rate, it may very well be in your favor to pay the small fee so that you can enjoy the card’s benefits. In other words, if you have to choose between a credit card that boasts a low interest rate and a $29 annual fee and another credit card with a higher interest rate and no annual fee, it could very worthwhile to pay the annual fee and secure the credit card with the lower interest rate.
  • Second, you can always call the credit card company and request that they waive the annual fee. It is not uncommon for credit card companies to waive an annual fee in order to get your business. You may have to pay the annual fee the first year to prove your credit worthiness to the creditor, but when the annual fee arrives for the second year and you have a year’s worth of payments and purchases under your belt, you can certainly use your excellent credit history to bargain for the annual fee to be removed.
  • Third, a card with an annual fee may offer features that make the card valuable. This may include cash back rewards, gas rewards, airline rewards and the like. If you consider the rewards you are receiving, then a small annual fee may not be too costly.

Why Choose a No Annual Fee Credit Card

With that said, it is important to remember that there are a plethora of great credit cards that offer competitive rates, rebate and cash back rewards programs and NO annual fee.

In order to qualify for a credit card with no annual fee, you will likely need to have a great credit score. In other words, it is not uncommon for creditors to charge an annual fee to consumers with less-than-perfect credit.

You may also find a no annual fee credit card with a special introductory rate that may appeal to you if you plan to make a large purchase or transfer a balance. Pay close attention, though, as the APR charged after the introductory rate may be quite high.

A card with no annual fee may also have hidden costs to make up for the no annual fee. For example, carefully read the card’s terms and conditions and pay close attention to the APR (and whether it is fixed), the APR for cash advances, and the fees charged for late payments.

A no annual fee credit card can be found through most banks and lending institutions, and most retail credit cards offer no annual fee. Your ability to find a no annual fee credit card may just take a bit of time and patience on your end.

Don’t forget that annual fees are negotiable, and it is possible to have your annual fee waived or reduced if you prove yourself to be a good customer.

Although creditors are not handing out credit as freely as they once did, it is important to remember that they are still looking for good credit card customers. In other words, if you have a gleaming credit history and strong FICO score, the credit card company charging the annual fee will likely work with you to keep your business.

Credit cards with no annual fees, just like any other type of credit card, have many features, terms and benefits that should all be understood before you apply for the card.
